Named for my bestefar (grandfather) Thorvald Kristian Dalebø, who went to see at 12 years of age on a wind-jammer around Cape Horn. He went on to become a captain of a millionaires yacht on the Great Lakes of Canada and USA. He retired and returned to Norway when the German army invaded Norway, to look after the family with the help of his US pension, which ceased in 1942 when the USA decided which side to support, and joined in alongside the Allies.
As a boy I would run to him whenever I saw a boat coming into the quay, and he would have to walk me down there to watch them tying up and unloading, regardless of the weather. He also taught me to tie many seamans knots, which I am ashamed to say I have forgotten, but 75 years on I have an excuse.
