Introduced by Antoine Wintzer of The Conard & Jones Co., West Grove, Pennsylvania, USA, Canna 'Dr. Nansen' is a medium sized cultivar; green foliage, oval shaped, spreading habit; triangular main stems, coloured green; flowers are open, self-coloured cream, staminodes are medium size, edges irregular, petals yellow, fully self-cleaning, good bloomer, flowers in early summer until frosts, blooms open in the early morning; fertile both ways, not self-pollinating or true to type, capsules globose; rhizomes are thick, up to 3 cm in diameter, coloured white; tillering is average.
Canna 'Dr. Nansen' is available from specialist growers. One of the earliest of the 'whites', as breeders worked to produce the glorious whites that we now have in our collections. A sturdy plant that earns it's own place in any garden. As I age and reduce my collection to a more manageable size I will ensure that I keep this one.
