Longwood Gardens is a public garden that consists of more than 1,100 acres (445 hectares; 4.45 km2) of gardens, woodlands, lakes and meadows in the Brandywine Creek Valley in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, United States. It is one of the premier horticultural display gardens in the United States and is open to over a million visitors year-round to enjoy native and exotic plants and horticulture.
Canna is a staple in the summer garden, adding color, texture and a tropical feel. At Longwood, cannas provide critical height in the borders and conservatory. The beauty of the canna inspired Longwood to begin a breeding programme in the 1970s. The programme has produced more than 18 named canna cultivars that have been released to the commercial market and used here at Longwood. These plants include both terrestrial and aquatic varieties.
The aquatic plants that emerged from the breeding programme are the four water canna C. 'Endeavour', C. 'Erebus', C. 'Ra' and C. 'Taney', all bred for the shallows of Longwoods large lakes. They are all attractive plants with their lance-like green foliage, and very strong growers, which can overpower a small garden pond.
