Introduced by Marcelle Sheppard Nursery, Texas, USA in 1995, Canna 'Red Ribbons' is a small cultivar; green foliage, oval shaped, acute apex, spreading habit; spikes of flowers are erect, self-coloured burnt-red, staminodes are narrow, petals purple with farina, fully self-cleaning, average bloomer, flowers in early summer until frosts, blooms open in the early morning; fertile both ways, not self-pollinating or true to type, capsules globose; rhizomes are thick, up to 3 cm in diameter, coloured purple.
Canna 'Red Ribbons' is available from specialist growers.
While many breeders have focussed on ever-wider stamodes and the desire to produce more Premier Group cultivars, it must not be forgotten that we also have the alternative of Ribbon flowers, where the staminodes are long and thin and give us more movement as they ally with the breeze. Canna 'Red Ribbons' certainly succeeds in this respect, and the cultivar was very popular when it was first introduced.
