I named this one for my Bestefar (best-father, grandfather) in Norway. He went to sea at 12 years of age as a cooks boy, then on windjammers around Cape Horn to Australia and finished his long sailing career as a Captain on the Canadian Great Lakes, but returning home to Norway before the German Invasion, to be with his family through the hell that Germany forced on Norway for nearly six years of Nazi occupation and sharing the wartime death of two of his sons with my Bestemor.
As a boy Thorvald taught me to tie knots from just a few years old (I have forgotten most of them), let me help with his daily chores, walked me down to the quay as boats came into the harbour, and I worshipped the very ground he walked on.
I still have Thorvald's best walking-out, walking stick made from a sharks backbone and collected on his Pacific voyages, but I haven't yet accepted the need for a walking stick, so it stays in the hall waiting for me to age a bit more.
