Introduced by Bernard Yorke, Australia in 2008, Canna 'Tivoli' is a tall Foliage Group cultivar; green foliage, large, lanceolate shaped, acute apex, upright habit; spikes of flowers are pendulous, deep-pink with a wide ivory margin, staminodes are medium size, edges irregular, petals yellow, fully self-cleaning, good bloomer, flowers in early summer until frosts, blooms open in the early morning; fertile both ways, not self-pollinating or true to type, capsules globose; rhizomes are thick, up to 3 cm in diameter, coloured white and pink; tillering is average.
Canna 'Tivoli' is available from specialist growers; breeding is unnamed x Omega.
Bernard wrote, "Plants of Tivoli are quite tall,(nearly 6ft) and leaves are obviously related to the pollen parent in that they are long green and quite pointed. However, the plants make a good sized clump quite quickly with foliage all pointing upwards. The rhizomes are not creeping like the pollen parent. Flowers are somewhat pendulous, but nicely variegated."
It seems to me that it's a shame we do not know what the seed parent was, as that parent has added the open, larger flower to the offspring, but the flower stalks appear to have difficulty in holding their larger flower trusses upright, hence the pendulous effect.
Some people like the pendulous effect, others consider such plants as inferior, and for what it's worth I think that there is room for some plants with a bell-like deportment, but I would hate to see it become common-place. I intend next growing season to focus on the use of the Foliage Group as crosses with my large Premier Group cultivars, and have started to wonder if obfuscating the Australian Group was a smart move.
