Introduced by G. Ernst, Canna 'Adolf Ernst' is a medium sized cultivar; green foliage, oblong shaped, acute apex, white margin, spreading habit; oval main stems, coloured green; triangular flower stalks, coloured dark green; spikes of flowers are open, self-coloured red, staminodes are medium size, edges irregular, petals red with farina, fully self-cleaning, good bloomer, flowers in early summer until frosts, blooms open in the early morning; fertile both ways, not self-pollinating or true to type, capsules globose; rhizomes are thick, up to 3 cm in diameter, coloured pink and purple; tillering is average.

Named for Adolf Ernst, a leading botanist in the 19th Century, and a correspondent with noless than Charles Darwin himself.
