Introduced by P. Schmid in 1971, Canna 'Aphrodite' is a medium sized Premier Group cultivar; dark (137A) foliage, oblong shaped, acute apex, maroon margin, spreading habit; round main stems, coloured purple; triangular flower stalks, coloured purple; flowers are open, self-coloured salmon, staminodes are large, edges serrated, labellum is pink (51A), stamen is pink, petals red, fully self-cleaning, good bloomer, flowers in late summer until frosts, blooms open in the early morning; fertile both ways, not self-pollinating or true to type, capsules globose; rhizomes are thick, up to 3 cm in diameter, coloured pink and purple; tillering is average.

Canna 'Aphrodite (2)'was awarded RHS Canna Trial 2002, AGM; is available from specialist growers.

Van Klaveren. Medium height, with large dusky-pink flower. Young plants have bronze foliage, which changes to dark green as the plant gets bigger. What sets this Canna apart from others is that the stem and leaf central vein is red. Not the original ‘Aphrodite’ (P Schmidt), though it meets the same description.

(M) Large, dusky pink flowers are produced over green foliage, which is tinted bronze when young. It has the added attraction of red stems and central leaf veins. Current stock is said to have been raised by van Klaveren. The original was raised by P. Schmidt and fits the same description

Summary: Pink, well-shaped flower. A good colour combination with young bronze leaves which become green but retain dark midrib. Goblet-shaped clump. Size: Plant height 150cm. Foliage height 130cm. Goblet shaped clump, with upright stems and gently spreading leaves. Flower: Staminodes salmon pink (51A); labellum, stigma and stamen slightly richer pink; petals pink-red. In UK starts flowering late June. Foliage: Long, narrow leaves are dark, mid-green (137A) with light bronzing to main vein and apex with dark border. Stems purple-bronze. Origin: Hybridised by P. Schmidt. Awards: 2002, 'Award of Garden Merit' at the RHS Wisley trials.
