Introduced by Karl Sprenger of Messrs Dammann et Cie, Italy in 1898, Canna 'Roma' is a medium sized Italian Group cultivar; green foliage, oval shaped, acute apex, white margin, upright habit; round main stems, coloured green & purple; flowers are open, yellow with orange blotches, throat red-orange, staminodes are large, edges lightly frilled, stamen is orange-red, petals red, fully self-cleaning, good bloomer, flowers in early summer until frosts, blooms open in the early morning; seed is sterile, pollen is low fertile; rhizomes are long and thin, coloured white and pink; tillering is prolific.

Roma. - Plante aussi grande et aussi vigoureuse que la précédente. Tiges ayant atteint 2m 45 de hauteur, erigées, cylindriques, vertes à peine teintées de violacé, au nombre de 15 sur un jeune plant de l’année. Feuilles dressées, grandes, ovales-aiguës, à longues gaines vertes, à limbe vert foncé épais et parcheminé, fortement nervées-striées, à côte médiane un peu canaliculée en dessus, très-saillante et arrondie en dessous, à bords blancs amincis. Hampe à une ou deux ramifications longues, accompagnées aux nœuds renflés de longues gaines semi-embrassantes, vertes nuancées de violet, obtuses. Inflorescence en épi paniculé, à rachis vert, triquêtre; fleurs géminées, accompagnées de deux ou trois bractées sub-orbiculaires dont l'extérieure plus grande; ovaire vert, obscurément trigône, surmonté des trois sépales d'un rose verdàtre bordé de blanc, égalant la longueur du tube de la corolle dont les divisions externes sont lancéolées aiguës brun rosé, à bords convolutés; divisions internes largement ovales à centre rouge orange fauve s'irradiant en dentelures et en larmes de même couleur jusqu'au large bord jaune doré; division la plus centrale et étamine pétaloïde jaune d'or ponctué d'orangé du milieu à la base; anthére latérale jaune clair; pistil spatulé oblique, vernissé, jaune clair à sommet rouge. Capsule grosse, trigone, verruqueuse, stérile.
